"Surviving
Prostate Cancer
- 10 years and beyond"
Dr.
Peter Chung
This
excellent talk, conducted by Dr. Peter Chung
on behalf
of Dr. Mary Gospodarowicz, was attended by
over 80 members,
spouses and guests.
[Dr.
Gospodarowicz was unable to present the talk in person
due to an unforeseen schedule change]
In essence Dr. Chung's
talk dealt with the definition of 'survivor' and
issues related to long term care and cancer survivorship.
He opened
his talk with a discussion on how early screening and modern
treatment had helped improve results and delayed treatment
failure.
He remarked that today most patients with early stage disease
could expect
to survive beyond 15 years. Follow up practices included PSA
monitoring,
Problem Management and Lifestyle counseling. He presented
statistical data
from various clinical trials and compared and discussed the
outcomes for
different forms of treatment.
Coming next to long term care, however, he explained that
currently there
was lack of established guidelines and that most patients
were not seen beyond
10 years. There was little in the way of research on long
term care and lack
of reliable information. Thus long term care remained largely
fragmented and
in the hands of GP's or other medical professionals who may
not always be
familiar with issues related to cancer survivorship. He defined
Cancer
survivorship as “living with, through, and beyond cancer”
and also touched upon
the broader aspect of Cancer Survivors to include families
and even care givers.
Dr. Chung then went
on to present some of the Cancer Survivorship Initiatives
such as those at The Lance Armstrong Foundation and The Cancer
Foundation.
To illustrate what was needed he examined the goals and aims
of the Lance
Armstrong Initiative and the ten point action plan of the
Institute of Medicine (US).
Dr. Chung concluded his talk with a presentation of PMH Survivorship
Initiates.
Of these, the Pediatric was the most developed, Breast Cancer
had been recently
established and it is hoped that a Prostate Cancer Survivorship
program could
likewise be established in the future.
Following the talk
members came forth with a vast variety of questions. Dr. Chung
provided detailed answers to each one and this Question &
Answer session was
amongst the most interactive and interesting we have ever
seen. The evening ended
with a tremendous applause and appreciation for Dr. Chung,
who bear in mind, had
to fill in for Dr. Gospodarowicz at the very last minute.
We are indeed very thankful to Dr. Gospodarowicz
for nominating Dr. Peter Chung
in her absence and to Dr.
Peter Chung for having accepted.
