Our 2nd Free PSA clinic

17th Sep, 2005

Shoppers World, Brampton

A free PSA clinic was conducted on Saturday, the 17 Sep 05 at
the 'Shoppers World' mall at Brampton sponsored by Canadian Medical
Labs and
Us Too! Brampton. Supporting the clinic were two phlebotomists,
one clerk and Ian Smith, Vice Chairman and Awareness coordinator of our group.
Within the first hour 15 men are reported to have lined up wanting their PSA checked.
A total of 77 men were processed by the clinic.

Mr. Ian Smith observed much interest from passers-by in the proceedings but he says some
expressed surprise that the clinic was looking for men in the 40 years age group. He reports hearing
comments such as "you've got to be kidding". Some men changed their mind and signed up when
they heard the rationale for the target age group but other younger men "didn't want to know".

Statistical compilation of the PSA values resulting from the Free PSA clinic have been
consolidated and show slightly under 10 % of the individuals tested had elevated PSA
levels. This data is consistent with similar clinics held at other locations in Canada and
also consistent with our first free PSA clinic held last year. Like last year the individual
PSA readings will be reviewed by Dr. Stanley Flax and referred to respective family
doctors as needed. A beneficial spin off the clinic is that some recently diagnosed men
who showed up for testing may need counseling as early as possible
- the clinic served
as an avenue bringing our group's existence and our support function to their attention.

This was the 2nd such Free PSA Clinic conducted by Us Too! Brampton and it turned
out to be a worthwhile exercise. Public announcements of the event were were in place
at 'Shoppers World from mid-week on. Our 1st free PSA clinic, held last year [April '04]
at Bramalea City Center, had also proved very successful.

Us Too! Brampton acknowledges thanks to the Canadian Medical
Labs for conducting the PSA Tests,
to Dr. Stanley Flax
for his invaluable support and for reviewing the results and to Ian Smith
for all his ongoing efforts in organizing it.
